The Books of the Old Testament – Overview
The Old Testament contains 39 books that can be divided into 4 general sections.
1. The Law – 5 books – (Genesis to Deuteronomy)
The general message of the books of the law is primarily tracing the history of God’s communications to, and His direct dealings with, His earthly children. This period begins with Abraham and goes to and through the time of the patriarchs and up to the death of Moses. This period ends just prior to the time the children of Israel go over into the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua.
2. History – 12 books – (Joshua to Esther)
These books record the preparation for the coming of Christ. This history is significant in the shaping of the world, its civilizations, and its religions.
3. Poetry – 5 books – (Job to Song of Solomon)
In general, these books form the center of influence of devotion for the world’s sacred music and worship.
4. Prophecy – 17 books – (Isaiah to Malachi)
The first 5 books are known as the major prophets
The next 12 books are known as the minor prophets
The main value of the books of prophecy is convincing proofs of the divine inspiration of both the Old and New Testaments, and of the divine Sonship of Christ. They contain hundreds of prophecies which were fulfilled to the minutest detail in Christ.
In studying the written Word of God, I am consistently reminded by the Holy Spirit to study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (II Timothy 2:15).
Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all (I Timothy 4:15).
