Where and how did we get our Holy Bible? - Part 2

What are some of the most ancient know versions of the Old Testament? The Septuagint is the oldest existing complete version of the Old Testament. In the second century Aquila of Pontus translated what is known as Aquila’s version. Theodotian and Symmachus produced translations which are now known by the names of the translators. There are also Syria, Egyptian, Ethiopia, Armenian, and many other versions.

Note the three leading ancient versions of the New Testament, and where they are today. The three leading manuscripts are the Vatican, Sinaitic, and Alexandrian. The Vatican is in the Vatican Library at Rome. The Sinaitic is in the British Museum in London. The Alexandrian is also in the British Museum.

Here is what you can say of the antiquity of quotations from the writings of the Apostles. It is said that if every copy of the New Testament were destroyed, it could be replaced from a copy of quotations from it found in other writings. A number of the quotations go back to the very time of the apostles.

Here is the running history of our English Bible. In the year 735 A.D., the Venerable Bede finished the translation of the Gospel of John in Anglo-Saxon. Next were the translations of Alfred the Great. Wycliffe gave the people the Scriptures in English about 1378. Tyndale produced the first printed Bible. In 1536 appeared the Cloverdale Bible, and in 1611 came the King James Bible. There have been numerous translations since the production of the King James Bible, particularly during the last 50 years.

Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all (I Timothy 4:15).
