Paul points out four of the chief characteristics of the life of love. These are, the love of the brethren, hospitality, sympathy with those who are in bonds or persecuted, and the love of the married couple.

Number 3 – Remember them that are in bonds, as bond with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being you also in the body (Hebrews 13:3).

Be sympathetic to others. We need to extend sincere sympathy, and offer our services, to those who are currently going through trials and sufferings.

When I was a youngster, people took a sincere personal interest in their neighbors. When someone had a big job to do, the neighbors all helped; when a mother was ill, the neighbors sent over hot cooked meals; when there was a death in the family, the neighbors visited and comforted the bereaved. But today, neighborliness is almost a lost art. People today are so wrapped up in television, ipods, texting, tablets, phones, and their own personal affairs that they do not make time for others.

“Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others (Philippians 2:4) .”   We know so well in our own body that when one part of our body hurts or when one member suffers, then all the members suffer along with it. We are to feel towards the prisoners and the persecuted as if we ourselves were suffering. We have been admitted to a life in the home and the love of God, they who abide there will learn how to love all members.

Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all (I Timothy 4:15).
