The Doctrines of Christ
The seven fundamental doctrines of Christ are listed in Hebrews 6:1-2.
King James Version. Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead work, and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment (KJV).
The New Living Translation reads as follow:
So let us stop going over the basics of Christianity again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding. Surely, we do not need to start all over again with the importance of turning away from evil deeds and placing our faith in God. You do not need further instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, and the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment.
Repentance from dead works. Repent means to change one’s mind or to reverse one’s decision. In the book of Hebrews, repent means to turn around. Regret is not repenting and remorse is not enough. Many folks are remorseful and regret what they have done but this is not repentance. Repentance is when you turn from doing wrong in the sight of God and decide to trust God to forgive and restore you.
Faith toward God is being convinced and fully persuaded that you can rely upon God and His Son Jesus Christ.
Doctrine of Baptisms. Although there are several types of baptisms recorded in the Bible, most folks are familiar with water baptism and the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Some folks might even consider Jonah living in the belly of a big fish for three days as a form of water baptism.
Laying on of Hands. The actual laying on of hands is performed by a believer in Jesus Christ. The doctrine of laying on of hands can be found in the Bible and is performed for a number of reasons including to administer a healing, to receive the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in an unknown tongue, to receive a special calling or anointing before being sent or chosen for ministry work. In general, you should not go into the ministry without being spiritually empowered for laying on of hands.
Resurrection of the Dead. The Bible teaches that our bodies will be raised physically and materially and our souls will be reunited with our transformed and glorified bodies. Those that believe that Jesus Christ died for their sins and was resurrected three days later will join Christ in Glory with Him.
Eternal Judgment. This judgment refers to a constant state of being for all eternity. Jesus judges both believers and unbelievers. Anyone whose name is not written in the book of life will be cast into the lake of eternal fire.
Going on into perfection through eternal life. Perfection as used in scripture means maturity and completeness in Jesus Christ. Although we can grow to spiritual maturity overtime, one cannot really be completely changed until our human nature has been totally changed. Only then will we be perfect as our father in heaven. Only then will we have the mind of Christ that brings every thought into the obedience of Christ. Only then will we have no more impure thoughts. Let us give Glory to God and to His Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all (I Timothy 4:15).
