Civil Law for Believers
1. Agree with thy adversary quickly and avoid lawsuits if possible
Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing (Matt 5:25-26).
2. Resist not evil
But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on they right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away they coat, let him have they cloke also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain (Matt 5:39-41).
3. Seek not vengeance on enemies
Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them (Luke 9:55-56).
4. Give tribute to not offend
What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers? . . . Then are the children free. Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee (Matt 17:25-27).
5. Give that to Caesar which is Caesar’s
Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? Show me the tribute money. Whose is the image and superscription? Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s (Matt 22:18-31).
6. Take not the sword
Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword (Matt 26:52).
7. Christ’s Kingdom not of this world
My kingdom is not of this world: If my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence (John 18:36).
Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all (I Timothy 4:15).
